Rogers Scholars climbed to new heights during a day of teambuilding and leadership exercises Monday, capped by their scaling a 55-foot Alpine Tower on the grounds of the Team Leadership Center in Wayne County.

Lauren Rose, a junior at Knox Central High School, used Twitter to “tweet” her friends as she made it to the top. So did Logan Finley of Louisa and his friend, Josh Akers of Floyd County.

In a tweet to his friends, Akers proudly proclaimed he climbed the corporate ladder making it to the highest level of the Alpine Tower on the challenging and difficult ropes course.

The first class of Rogers Scholars, here for a one-week camp hosted by The Center for Rural Development, spent Monday together as a group concentrating on building their team and leadership skills.

Scholars worked on a series of leadership activities, led by Norrie Wake and his staff, to better understand the role of a leader and characteristics for becoming an effective team member.

On Tuesday, the Scholars will participate in an entrepreneurship training session, presented by Charley Simpson, executive vice president and CIO of The Center, followed by a career exploration session with representatives from some of the top colleges and universities in the state.

Later on the evening, Scholars will attend a formal dinner and enjoy their turn on the dance floor learning how to ballroom dance in the front lobby of The Center.

Parents can follow Scholars and view a photo library of some of their activities by logging on Rogers Scholars’ website at www.rogersscholars.com.
