Under the direction of lead facilitator Norrie Wake and his support team, Scholars participated in a series of hands-on leadership and team-building exercises.

In one of the exercises, Scholars learned what it takes to work as a team when they transported a bucket of water—behaving as if it were the highly dangerous element plutonium—across a difficult and challenging log course without spilling its contents. Each member held the bucket in place by tightening or loosening up on the tension in the line while transporting the bucket and its contents across a set of logs.

In another exercise, Scholars were challenged to set personal goals and try to achieve those goals by climbing a 54-foot Alpine Tower ropes course. Those who climbed to the top of the platform—or even to the first level—were rewarded for their efforts by the cheers and encouraging words of support from their fellow team members on the ground.

Scholars will be working at The Center for Rural Development Tuesday participating in two entrepreneurship training sessions facilitated by Jim Carroll, director of the Center for Entrepreneurial Growth with the Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation, and Charley Simpson, executive vice president and CIO of The Center. In addition, Scholars will attend a career exploration session in the afternoon with representatives of colleges and universities across Kentucky and wrap up the day’s activities with a formal dinner and etiquette training followed by ballroom dancing.
