SOMERSET, KY – Lindsay Egnew, of Russell Springs, KY, has been named to the 2005-2006 class of Begley Scholars at Lindsey Wilson College. She is one of only six incoming freshmen to receive this scholarship which covers participants’ tuition, as well as room and board.

Egnew is also a 2003 Rogers Scholar graduate and was selected to represent Russell County in the intensive one-week summer program hosted by The Center for Rural Development.

Egnew was selected from among 71 Kentucky high school seniors who were invited by Lindsey Wilson to compete for the scholarship. Students are named Begley Scholars based on their academic ability and performance, leadership, community service and extracurricular activities.

“These six students are some of Kentucky’s top young leaders,” said Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr. “They have demonstrated, through their high school careers, that they are committed to making a difference in their local communities. They will make wonderful additions to our campus community.”

As a Begley Scholar, Egnew will be expected to participate in at least two co-curricular activities simultaneously, assuming formal leadership in at least one of them. She will also be required to fulfill a service component, and is expected to distinguish herself as a woman of high moral character by living according to high personal standards and exercising good judgment daily.

The value of the renewable scholarship is more than $19,000 a year, and more than $80,000 over four years.

Egnew is the second member of her family to be named a Begley Scholar. Her sister, Laura Egnew Davidson, was a Begley Scholar and is a 2003 Lindsey Wilson alumna.

Egnew plans to major in math education and Christian ministries, and she hopes to become a math teacher. She is the daughter of Ricky and Tammy Egnew, of Russell Springs.

The Rogers Scholars program was founded in 1998 by U.S. Congressman Harold “Hal” Rogers (KY-05) with the goal that “no young person will need to leave home to find his or her future.” This intensive one-week summer session for rising high school juniors from 42 counties in Southern and Eastern Kentucky emphasizes technological skills development and fosters an entrepreneurial spirit, leadership skills and commitment to rural Kentucky. Rogers Scholars interact with state and national leaders and work with quality instructors to focus on leadership, technology, entrepreneurship and community service.
